All vehicles registered with licence plates are subject to official periodic inspection (Art. 33 and 34 Ordinance on the Technical Requirements for Road Vehicles VTS)
A traffic offence always results in two proceedings. These are carried out simultaneously and independently of each other by two different authorities: The penal authority at the place of the offence must decide on the amount of the penalty (fine / custodial sentence). The penal authority of the canton of residence decides on any measures (warning, deportation). The penalty procedure is also subject to a fee.
Vehicles that do not comply with the regulations on weights and dimensions due to their load, as well as exceptional vehicles, may only travel on public roads on the basis of a written authorisation. Individual licences are issued for one or more specific journeys and permanent licences for any number of journeys.
