The path to the Car driver’s license (Cat. B)
First Aid course
You are attending the first aid course. This education lasts for about 10 hours. The first aid certificate is valid for 6 years. The course can be completed before age 16.

Vision test
You will have to do the vision test at an approved optician, if your last vision test is older than 2 years.
If you already have a license in another category for which you had to take a vision test, then this is still valid today, if it has not been made more than two years ago.
Application form
You will need:
- a color passport photo
- the vision test
- copie of your ID resp. residence permit

Bring the application form personally to the Road Traffic Office or to the population department. Don’t forget the first aid card, Swiss identity card or residence permit. The application may be done within one month prior to the 18th Birthday.

Learner’s permit
You will receive the learner's permit by mail. The learner's permit is valid for 24 months.
Traffic theory
You will complete the Traffic Theory course in a driving school: Driving schools with Traffic Theory courses
It is recommended to visit the traffic theory course parallel to the driving lessons and not to complete the course before the first driving lesson. You can register for the course e.g. after 5 hours of driving lessons.
Driving lessons
In the Swiss Driving Instructors you can find over 5000 offers for driving lessons. You can easily compare the different offers: First impression of the instructor, offers, prices and reviews.
Practical exam
Register online for the practical exam: book a date
If you do not want to pass the practical exam in your canton of residence, you can submit a request to pass the driving test in another canton at the road traffic office of your canton of residence.
Example: You are resident in the canton of Grisons, but live during the week in the canton of Bern. If you want to pass the practical exam in the canton of Bern, you place the request at the Road Traffic Office of the Canton of Grisons.
Driver’s license
After having passed the exam you get your driver's license by mail.
WAB 1
After having passed the practical exam you will have to complete the WAB1 course during the next 6 months.
If you have entered your mobile number we will remind you 4 weeks before the deadline by SMS in addition to an e-mail.
WAB 2
After having passed the practical exam you may complete the WAB2 course, however it is not mandatory anymore.
If you have entered your mobile number we will remind you 4 weeks before the deadline by SMS in addition to an e-mail.
License exchange
Apply for the permanent driver’s license at the Road Traffic Office within one month prior to the expiration date of the driver's license on probation. You will get the application form WAB course provider.
The path to the Scooter driver’s license (Cat. A1)
